VALE, William: (fl. 1794-1822). Retailer; Perfume and Tunbridge ware repository at 62 Fleet Street, London. Advertised ‘… Caddies and Chests for tea and sugar, manufactured in various kinds of curious wood which change of climate cannot injure’ in The Times, 27 January 1803, 25 December 1804, and several other dates. Advertised ‘a variety of white wood articles, prepared for Ladies’ own painting’ in The Times, 14 August 1804, 24 December 1805, and other dates. Advertised ‘Every article in white wood prepared to paint on, and an assortment finished in the Greek and Etruscan style which may be copied’ in The Times, 3 February 1806. Advertised teapoys as ‘beautiful tables for tea and sugar work’ in The Times, 26 January 1807. (Chapters 6: Tunbridge ware and 9: Penwork) 


VICKERS, James: Sheffield (fl. 1769-1809). Metalware manufacturer (pewterer) at Hollis Street (1769-1774), at Hartshead (1775-1776), at Sims Croft (1777), at Campo Lane (1778), at Broad Lane (1778-1787), and at Garden Walk (1787-1809), Sheffield. 

Britannia metal tea caddy, c. 1780-90, attributed to Vickers; bright-cut engraved decoration and punched roundels; reserve with initials ‘A G’; acorn finial; hinged on short side; two interior compartments; decoration, notably drapery around shield, almost identical to that on pieces marked by Vickers. VILE, William: (fl. c. 1750-1767). Cabinetmaker and upholsterer at 4 premises Castle Lane (1751), London; in partnership with John Cobb, trading as Vile & Cobb, at 72 St Martin’s Lane, (1752-1767). Receipt ‘For a Japann’d Tea Chest £1-15-’ supplied to Lady Caroline Bridges, Cleveland House, 19 St James’s Square, London, 13 January 1755. (DEFM
