UPTON, William: (fl. 1815-1864). Tunbridge ware manufacturer; recorded at various manufactory and retail premises, the latter ‘Near the Theatre, New Road’ (1818-1822), and at 5 King’s Road (1851-1864), Brighton. Tunbridge ware tea caddy, c. 1820; rosewood veneer with perspective cube work; two compartments; billhead on base stating ‘NEAR THE THEATRE, NEW ROAD, BRIGHTON’. (Private collection; Chapter 6: Tunbridge ware, Figure 6.15). Tunbridge ware chest, c. 1845, attributed to Upton. Rosewood veneer; lid with marquetry butterfly on holly surround, flanked by miniature parquetry, with borders of tessellated mosaic; front with panel of perspective cube work, with tessellated mosaic border; two canisters and glass sugar bowl.
