Figure 13.24: Rolled paper caddy, c. 1835-40. Pine carcass; panels edged with stained wood; fine decoration in strong colours set against untinted ground on all sides and, those on sides adorned with finely painted circular watercolours showing six of the Seven Virtues – Faith, Hope and Charity on front, and Fortitude, Temperance and Justice on rear; all panels covered with protective glass; brass drop-loop handle on lid; wooden escutcheon; brass hinges; base uncovered. Temperance is represented by a young man holding a scroll with the word ‘Temperance’ and a banner promoting ‘Domestic comfort’. A circular mark of identical size appears on the underside of the lid, suggesting the former presence of another roundel, presumably portraying the seventh Virtue, Prudence. Height 13 cm (5 ¼ in); width 18.7 cm (7 ¾ in); depth 10.9 cm (4 5/8 in). Private collection
